Looking to buy a log splitter to use with the 3 pt. hitch on my tractor. Have looked at both pto driven and one that works off tractor hydraulics. Have little or no expertise in this area and looking for advice. The pto driven seems to develope more pressure but the one's I've looked at seems to be priced quite a bit higher then the hydraulic ones, however I understand the hydraulic one's are limited to the tractor's hydraulic pressure range and I need to add power beyond according to my dealer. Can someone give me the pro and cons of each?

Depending on the current configuration of your tractor, adding rear remotes can get to be a liitle expensive. Yet after spending the money on the remotes, you have them for other applications besides the log spltter, (top and tilt). Running off your tractor hydraulics works fine, you really don't need 20 tons to split most any log. I prefer to spend the money on a multiple use applications, like the rear remotes, instead of something that is captive to one piece of equipment.
Your dealer and the tractor specs are the best guides as to whether the tractor hydraulics are suitable for the splitter. If they are, I would spend the money for the remotes and run off the tractor instead of for another hydraulic system captive to the splitter. ....

If you just want to tinker at splitting wood get the remote. If you need to be serious about splitting wood go the power beyond route. If you are very serious about wood 20+ standard cords get a complete seperate unit.
My remotes will operate my splitter but it is painfully slow (not enough flow, volume) to operate a cylinder of any size. the power beyond is 3X better and the cycle times are greatly improved.
I have used the pto screw splitters (1 time and only for a couple of hours) and would never use one again. I would not let my boys with in 25 foot of the thing when I saw how it worked. They are the most dangerous things I have ever encountered.
My splitter is built so I can add a little diesel engine, a 22+gpm pump and a 5X24 cylinder. But I may never do that because the powerbeyond does a great job. BUT I may come across a smokin deal... ....

My power beyond and three point splitter was about the cheapest way to get into a system.
A separate PTO pump and a storage tank with several gallons of oil can easily cost more than a power beyond kit.
If I was splitting wood for a living I think there are better set-ups. But as a homeowner I am quite satisfied with the outfit I got. ....
